Example ID3 Tag Editor result sample-tagged.mp3 Updated ID3v2.4 text metadata: title, artist TIT2: Morning Walk TPE1: Local Recorder Existing TALB: Demo Album Next step: Audio payload bytes preserved means no audio re-encoding, not certification for every player. Compare tags, artwork, and playback before sharing.
How to use ID3 Tag Editor
Inspect MP3 ID3v2 tags or edit title, artist, album, year, and genre in a new copy. Clear all options to list frames without editing; the source file is not overwritten.
Untouched ID3 frames and audio bytes are preserved. Ordinary ID3v2.3.0 and ID3v2.4.0 tags are supported; artwork and custom frames remain, while unsafe flags are rejected rather than forcibly rewritten.
- Select a valid MP3 copy. To inspect first, clear the tag options and run to read the version and frame list.
- Enter only desired changes, one per line: title=, artist=, album=, year=, or genre= followed by text.
- Run, review the Updated ID3v2 list and Audio payload bytes preserved message, and download the -tagged.mp3 copy.
- Reopen it and compare changed fields, untouched tags, artwork, and playback with the original.
Useful for
- Revise a recording title and artist while retaining artwork and unrelated tags.
- Inspect the ID3 version and text or binary frame list without requesting changes.
- Add basic player-display metadata to an MP3 copy without an existing ID3v2 tag.
Limits and checks
- Blank or omitted values leave fields unchanged. An empty title= does not delete the title; artwork editing and removal of all metadata are not provided.
- An untagged file gets v2.4; existing ordinary v2.3/v2.4 keeps its version. Year maps to TYER in v2.3 and TDRC in v2.4.
- Limits are 16 MiB per tag, 1 MiB per text frame, and 10,000 frames. Chapters, offsets, signatures, and protected metadata require a full-featured editor.
Worked example
Change title and artist only
File: sample.mp3 (ordinary ID3v2.4) Existing album: Demo Album Options: title=Morning Walk artist=Local Recorder
Album and artwork are not requested for modification.
Re-read the edited copy
sample-tagged.mp3 Updated ID3v2.4 text metadata: title, artist TIT2: Morning Walk TPE1: Local Recorder Existing TALB: Demo Album
Clear the options when reopening to inspect actual frames. Tag and audio byte counts depend on the source.
Common issues
Unsupported tag or frame flags.
Unsynchronisation, extended headers, footers, compression, encryption, grouping, and read-only flags are not editable. Keep the source and use a full editor supporting those structures.
Missing MPEG audio frame, duplicate field, or chapter metadata.
Check for a truncated tag or another format renamed to MP3. CHAP/CTOC and other offset-related frames or duplicate requested text frames are rejected rather than discarded arbitrarily.
How to interpret the result
Updated lists the requested fields. Tag size may change with text length and encoding.
Related workflow
Audio payload bytes preserved means no audio re-encoding, not certification for every player. Compare tags, artwork, and playback before sharing.
Privacy and review notes
The operation uses selected local bytes. Preserved custom tags, artwork, and audio may contain identifying information; this is not a metadata anonymizer.
FAQ
Does editing re-encode audio or artwork?
For accepted files, only requested text frames are replaced. Untouched frames and audio payload bytes are copied without audio decoding or re-encoding. Reopen the output to check preservation.
Can a blank value delete a field?
No. Blank means unchanged. Supply text after the equals sign to replace a value, or use an editor with deletion support.
